Walking.
This weekend I took it upon myself to get out and spend some time outside. It was a hot weekend here in Nashville, so I wasn't really excited about getting on my bike and suffering in the heat. I also have a background in running. I think this tendency influences me to feel like I have to keep a decent pace when out on the trail or jogging around town. Well, this weekend I had some alone time to kill and it dawned on me that getting out on a trail didn't mean I had to run... or jog.. or put special clothes on... or worry about overheating... or my running shoes being old... or not feeling like running... so I walked.
Twice this weekend I made my way over to Percy Warner Park and walked the 2.5 mile "white" trail. My speed varied, but I always went a comfortable pace for the heat and my mood and energy level. It was good exercise.. not exactly "training", but when have I ever "trained"... the best part was the serenity it gave me and the time away from different aspects of my life to gain some perspective and peace. I got to see an owl and a beautiful sunset, too.
I think this is something I need to do more often.
